Since receiving my post-graduate certification in communications in 2002, I have created dozens of commercial web sites as the owner of Kallen Web Design. I have also done graphic design, print design and communications consulting for Eaton, Western Michigan University, the University of Michigan, Kelloggs and two advertising agencies.
Below are quite a few examples of my recent work. |
| Kaplan Corporation - Boston Construction Management - www.KaplanCorp.com |
|
The Kaplan Corporation, one of Boston's most respected construction management companies, needed a website to reflect their professionalism and showcase their numerous multi-million dollar projects.
Working with our designer, they chose to go with a minimalist approach, putting primary emphasis on photos from their project portfolio.
The company president offered many sincere compliments: "Kathleen was incredibly patient and flexible, and very easy to work with." |
| |
|
One of Kalamazoo Michigan's oldest and most respected landscaping companies wanted a more artistic and modern look to their website.
They spoke with many local web designers but chose Kallen Web Design because our owner and head designer, Kathleen Kallen, had the artistic background to reflect the creative nature of their work.
The unique masthead and excellent image galleries make this site stand out!
|
| |
|
The
Midwest's premier fundraising organization needed a website that reflected the high quality
of their company and made them easy to find on the search engines.
Collaborating on
the design and using their content, we created a website that expresses their professionalism and showcases the numerous organizations they have helped.
They report getting more contacts and more business thanks to their professional site and high rankings on google for their keywords. |
| |
|
This multi-state flooring retail business needed a site to reflect the high quality of the products
they sell. Our new site was intended to replace a poorly done site that was harming their reputation
We worked with a prominent advertising agency to determine what kind of image they would optimally want to project.
Their demographic is women in their 40's+, and the colors and layout are designed to appeal
to this group. The result is a site that draws much new business to their 19 stores in
three states. |
| |
|
We have been partnering with Phoenix Properties, a prominent West Michigan Property Management company, on their main website for several years.
When they brought two Big Rapids student luxury apartment complexes on-board, they asked us to create a two-complex website.
The vision for the site is to say "youthful, fun, student oriented, luxurious, and safe".
The site features online maintenance requests and a link to a "pay your rent online" service. |
| |
|
This
Indiana manufacturer had a poor quality website that did not reflect the quality of their product
or their professionalism.
Working entirely via phone and email, we passed design options by them and they chose the
one that reflected their company persona best. Using their content (logo, words and photos),
we created a site which demonstrates their quality and is easy to navigate.
We also modified a demo video they had, resizing it for viewing by customers with either
slow or fast internet, and made it available
on their site. |
| |
|
Kalamazoo Michigan's longest established Home Health Care Agency needed a website to illustrate their professionalism and explain the variety of services they offer, driving potential clients to pick up the phone and call for more information.
Using their color scheme, logos and content, and our creativity and web knowledge, we created a fantastic website.
Total time from receiving their words and pictures to the completed site was about 10 days. |
| |
|
This Texas publisher of Christian literature found us on Google and called for help. They have been printing and mailing out 20,000 catalogs every year. They needed a website that their customers could visit, avoiding the huge expense of printed catalogs.
We photographed and input the thousands of items from their catalog, putting it all on line for a fraction of the cost of printing and mailing catalogs.
"We are absolutely delighted with the website. What a dynamic duo you are!"
|
| |
|
The University of Michigan at Flint is using a Content Management System (CMS) that severely restricts any sort of creative web design. Frustrated, the Director of the Office of Student Life contacted us.
We discussed this with their webmaster, and then, on our own time, learned the in's and out's of the content management system.
Kathleen then created some colorful and creative web code which works perfectly within their system! All the staff is very pleased! |
| |
|
This independent Attorney needed a site to advertise her services and showcase her various
writings. Total time from start to going live on the web was about two weeks.
The site has excellent search engine placement (as do all of our sites), and we also include a free
hit tracker so our clients can tell how visitors find their site.
She reports getting numerous inquiries every week from clients who find her through Google,
Yahoo and MSN Live search engines. |
| |
|
The
owners of several student rental properties wanted to provide all the information students
would need to rent an apartment. They also wanted a site that reflected the high quality of their properties.
Working with their photos and text, we created a site that provided visitors all the needed
information and had a fun look to it as well.
Within a few weeks of going live with this site,
all their properties were fully rented! |
| |
|
The Director of the Western Michigan University Music Department's Trombone Program desired a website that portrayed the high quality of their program.
As a smaller program, they did not have much funding. Still we were able to work within their limited budget to create a really terrific website!
The site includes everything needed for the faculty members to do updates on their own. Another win-win for our client and Kallen Web Design!
|
| |
|
The owners of this site had purchased a web site package from another design company but
the end result lacked the polished look needed to represent the highly artistic qualities of their product.
After one week of working together we delivered a redesign that reflects the artistic
beauty of their unique merchandise. |
| |
|
The Founder/Executive Director of this 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization contacted us about their website situation.
One of their board members had made the referral for us.
We do not need to advertise because we get so many referrals from our satisfied clients and from people finding us on Google searches.
The site is designed to appeal to high school students and their parents, as well as their donors and supporters. Much thought went into every word and picture, and Kathleen took this content and crafted it into an attractive, practical website.
|
| |
|
The owner of Murray Landscaping is an old friend who did the landscaping on our residence. He had no website and knew he was losing business because of that.
We were able to swap part of the cost of the site for some of his services, which worked out well for both of us.
Getting to know their business and their staff, we put together a terrific web site that is bringing in more contacts and more business. |
| |
|
The Director of the Western Michigan University (WMU) MGRRE K-12 Education Program ("Core Kids") received a grant from the DTE Energy Foundation to make their Earth Science education materials available online to assist students and teachers.
Sticking with WMU's standard template, Kathleen helped them design the site to be easy to use for K-12 age children and also for teachers needing curriculum materials.
Kathleen also gave the Program Director training for doing most website updates!
|
| |
|
This
Western Michigan University department needed a more professional and attractive website which also conformed to the WMU standard formatting. We quickly created a new masthead and
menu system, then placed their content into it. Another Kallen Web site on
time and on budget!
Note that Student Interns have modified the site since it was completed. The link and image to the left will take you to a recreation of our original site. |
| |
|
A prominent Southwest Michigan Realtor wanted a web site to give her prime listings
more exposure.
We consulted with her to determine what style and themes best reflected her business and
created a site to reflect her personality and preferences.
Within a matter of a few weeks from start to finish, the site was bringing in new clients and new business! |
| |
|
This landscaping company knew that most people under 30 search on the internet for services
before they ever pick up a yellow pages.
This site is search engine optimized so that people looking for lawn services
will quickly find the company and then be impressed by the variety and quality of services
they offer.
They report more contacts and more business thanks to their professional website with its excellent google ranking for their keywords! |
| |
|
Now:
The Western Michigan University (WMU) Music Therapy Department is one of the most highly recognized Music Therapy programs in the nation.
However their website did not reflect the quality and professionalism of their program. The content (words, pdf files, other documents) was fine - but the site layout was not up to their professional standards (below left).
|
Before:
In a matter of less than a week, Kallen Web Design brought their site into the University Standard Template, created a Custom Masthead and Custom Splash Image Bar, brought all their words, pdf's and Docs over, added several new images, and then updated some of the content.
The Department Director is very pleased with the process and the results!
The total cost was only a little over half of his initial expectation! |
| |
|
This company had a home-grown web site that did not reflect the quality of their services.
We offered several masthead options and color schemes. They chose the one that was the
most appealing to them. We also created a photo gallery that displays their amazing work.
Now they report getting more contacts and more business thanks to their great website! |
| |
|
This resort owner had an out-of-date web site.
Working with their photos and tastes, we put together a great masthead and color scheme.
In only a few weeks time, their web presence went from embarrassing to fantastic! |
| |
|
This internationally recognized author desired a web site to showcase his books and articles,
and so colleagues looking for him on the web could find his contact information.
He desired a very straightforward, professional site without unnecessary graphics. He supplied
the content (text) and we did the rest. It is now a top hit on the search engines for his
keywords! |
| |
| WMU
Comparative Religion Departmental Website - www.wmich.edu |
|
This university department badly needed an updated site. After meeting with a group of five representatives from the
department, we integrated their ideas into our design. We used some of their graphics and
found many others to add to their theme. We also created links to Amazon.com so students could purchase books and the department would get a small commision.
The site has since been modified quite a lot by students and staff. It has evolved into something different from what we originally created for them so to be accurate here we have removed the live link. |
| |
|
This client owns a high-end vacation property rental business in Michigan. They felt
their homegrown site needed a more professional look, and approached us for assistance.
The client supplied the photographs and text for the site, then we developed a professional
yet fun design to highlight each property.
Every property page contains a slide show so potential customers can see many photos of
each cottage. There is also a link to a "specials" page, which they regularly
update without any assistance. |
| |
| Arcadia
Dental of West Michigan - www.ArcadiaDental.com |
|
This
prominent dental office needed an upbeat but professional site to market his services to local university students.
Students (and most people under 35) search Google before ever picking
up the yellow pages.
This site encourages
visitors to pick up the phone to make an appointment. He receives more contacts and more business because of his terrific website which is very highly ranked on google.
This link is no longer live due to management changes at the Dentist Office. |
| |
|
A
relative published a book and wanted a site to draw extra publicity to it. With our expertise in search engine optimization, he gets hundreds of hits a week from people searching
for funny stories.
The site then leads them to amazon.com where they can purchase his book. Note that we also
used his photos and text to create the book cover for publication. |
| |
|
Our head designer also directed a program at Western Michigan University. The program needed a way to
communicate to prospective and existing students and faculty.
This educational site contains an easily updated calendar, downloadable forms, a photo
and video gallery, podcasts, and other helpful "content".
The site saves the program director from having to answer many repetitive phone calls, because the most requested information is available 24/7 online! |
| |
|
The design objective for this employee recognition program at Western Michigan University
was to create a look and feel that was fun and professional.
We created animated buttons and incorporated a variation of the WMU logo. The site is crisp
and clean and easy to navigate. |
| |
|
The owners of this site, a Michigan biotech startup, needed a professional and informative
site for marketing their company.
We incorporated their logo and color scheme, then finished the site by adding a simple but compelling Flash banner. |
| |
|
We collected this Western Michigan University organization's existing materials (brochures, logos, posters, PowerPoint
presentation), sketched out a site structure and discussed the owner's goals and target
audience.
We created a masthead based on the agency's theme of reconciliation.
Another very satisfied Kallen Web Design customer! |
| |
|
This client needed a professional web site to refer their clients to for forms, coverage
information, and the pricing of their services.
Instead of using office resources to send faxes and answer basic questions, they can now
refer their customer inquiries right to their web site - saving them time and money! |
| |
|
The Eastern Michigan branch of a pre-marriage counseling organization wanted a website that reflected the beauty of marriage, and utilized their themes and logo. This site received many accolades for its beauty and message.
Later, due to changes in their organization, the Detroit branch was eliminated. The link and image to the left will take you to a recreation of our original site. |
| |
|
A
church in St. Charles, IL, needed a web site that looked contemporary. Their previous site
was text-dense and had all content on one long scrolling page, making it difficult to find
information.
Like many Kallen Web Design sites, this site is designed so that our client can do updates themselves. |
| |
|
This site is one of the first sites Kathleen completed early into her post-graduate certification in communications from the Advanced Technology Center for New Media.
The yarn company has long since taken over the maintenance of this site and made many changes. This is merely an archive.
We keep it in our portfolio even though it does not reflect our current level of professional work, but it does show a simple text masthead, colorful, clean graphics and an emphasis on the class schedule, address and store hours. And it brings back happy memories. |
